The Problem

Several products in the catalog naturally complemented each other, running shorts and base liners, for example, but customers weren't always aware of these combinations. Cross-sell opportunities were being missed, and shoppers had to manually search the site to find the products that paired with what they'd already added to their cart.

The Solution

We implemented an intelligent cart upsell logic based on product categories. If a customer adds a product from the "Shorts" category, but there's no product from the "Base Liners" category in their cart, the system automatically suggests a related item directly in the cart. The upsell only triggers when it's genuinely relevant, so recommendations always feel contextual rather than generic.

Why It Mattered

The upsell streamlined the buying journey, lifted cross-sell conversions, and improved Average Order Value. It also enhanced the customer experience by proactively recommending product combinations that improve performance and usability, so shoppers end up with a more considered setup rather than missing a related product.

Technical Details

Built around product category conditions and cart-level validation. The system dynamically checks cart contents and only triggers an upsell when a ‘pairs well with’ category is missing. The logic is scalable and can be adapted to other industries, for example: beauty (cleanser + moisturizer), sports (shoes + performance socks), and so on.
